"The sanctity of
Jerusalem
has in more than one sense made its history. Loved and adored by hundreds of
millions throughout the world and through the ages,
Jerusalem
lived through times of glory during
which it was built and embellished on grand and impressive scales. Yet for the
very reason of its unique place in the eyes of the faithful,
Jerusalem
was, in other times, to suffer
terribly. It was several times razed to the ground and its inhabitants
annihilated. But each time
Jerusalem
was destroyed it was destined to rise again. The history of
Jerusalem
is a mixture of glories and
catastrophes."
